How To Live Within Your Means

Living within your means is a hard phrase to live by, especially for the working population. When I started earning, I remember having troubles on saving because it was a fulfillment for me to spend the money I worked hard for. But after years of working, I was able to see how important it is to be aware of my daily expenses. If you are struggling with how to save, here are some tips from a friend, who is a that can help you in the practice of living within your means:

  1. Know your income.

This might sound too obvious, but allowing yourself to grasp the amount of money you are receiving monthly will make you realize how important it is to create a budget plan and control your expenses.

  1. Know your needs.

There are necessities that we should immediately purchase to secure the coming days, such as food or apartment rentals and utility bills. The first thing to do however, is to set a goal amount to set aside as your savings. Subtract this amount from your monthly income and create a budget plan based on that amount. You might be doing it the other way around, doing purchases before determining how much to save, but trust me after a few months you will be surprised how much your savings have grown in such a short span of time.

  1. Do not compare.

Every person in this world is living their own story, every one has a different plot; this is the reason why you should not compare yourself with other people. When a friend chooses to upgrade his/her phone, you are also urged to buy a new unit too. This should not be the case, assess your phone and ask yourself first whether you need the upgrade or you just want to have a new gadget. Comparing yourself with others especially on materialistic items will only do you no good; remember that you are the author of your own story and so you should not be influenced by other characters.

  1. Pay in cash.

Almost everything today can be done electronically, and most shops prefer cards than actually bills or cash. The problem with this however is that there is less control over how much we can spend, leading to higher bills. Bringing cash and using it will limit your tendencies of buying just because of a feeling, and makes you budget better.

  1. Find an extra source of income.

If you do fancy a new blouse or dress, there are a lot of extra jobs you can apply for. The internet today is brimming with online jobs, therefore you can earn even if you work from the comfort of your own home. Work for what you want, it will feel more precious if you’ve put extra effort to have it.

On top of all these, remember to not limit yourself and be happy. There should always be a perfect balance between saving and spending, so never deprive yourself with a reward once in a while, and keep on being positive.
